| Corporate Agencies Beat Web Air Fares! (1/16/2008) |
 |
Article by Jerry Limone.
The study concluded that agencies offered fares averaging $90 less than fares offered on consumer Web sites.
PORTLAND, Ore. - Corporate agencies do a better job finding the lowest fare than the traveler surfing consumer sites on the Internet, according to Topaz International, a company that audits air fares for large corporations. After a seven-month study that tracked the performance of Internet travel sites vs. the abilities of agents, Topaz concluded that agencies offered fares averaging $90 less than fares offered on consumer Web sites. Booking through the designated corporate agency still provides measurable value for the traveler and the corporation," said Valerie Estep, president of Topaz. Topaz said low Internet fares often require travelers to make connections, schedule flights six or more hours from the original requested departure time or use alternate airports. Even when a corporate traveler selected a fare on a consumer Web site, there was usually a fare on some other Web site that could beat it, said Estep, who added that researching fares on the Internet could come at the expense often of an employee's time and productivity.
"Internet Web sites are not always designed to factor traveler time and convenience when searching for the lowest possible fare," Estep said. "The fares returned might not be the most cost effective for the business traveler." Travelers booking through agencies were offered the lowest possible fare more than 95% of the time, and agencies of all sizes performed at the same level, Topaz found. Topaz said fare audits verify that an agency is following a corporation's travel policy, offering the lowest possible fares, and using negotiated rates. Topaz also uses data to benchmark an agency's performance relative to the national average.
